Housing

Washington Intern Student Housing’s (WISH) Woodley Park center is ASU’s preferred housing for Sun Devils interning, living and working for a semester in Washington, D.C. Located in the Northwest district of Washington, D.C., WISH Woodley Park center offers interns fully furnished housing just blocks from the Metro, in a neighborhood with restaurants, cafes and drugstores.

Getting around Washington

Washington, D.C. is one of the most public transportation-friendly cities in the nation, and students will not need a car to get around. Washington’s extensive Metro system connects to all four quadrants of D.C. as well as suburban Virginia and Maryland. Before you start riding, you will need to purchase a SmarTrip pass, available at any Metro station. Cash and credit cards are accepted at all stations. ASU’s Barrett & O’Connor Center is located at the Farragut West Metro Station (18th Street exit). 

Multiple car, scooter and bike sharing apps (including Capital Bike Share, Lyft, Uber, Zipcar and more) are also available in Washington, D.C.

Meetings and Events

Planning an event at the Barrett & O’Connor Center

ASU faculty, staff and partners are welcome to use the Barrett & O’Connor Center to convene university representatives and partners, including hosting classes, meetings, conferences, workshops, receptions, video conferences and other events. The center can accommodate meetings and programs with up to 70 seated guests The Barrett & O'Connor Center Event Guide provides room diagrams, a capacity chart, a list of audio-visual capabilities, catering options, and more.

Please note that the Barrett & O'Connor Center is not available for outside rental or use by non-ASU groups.

Hoteling space

Hoteling space at the Barrett & O’Connor Center

The ASU Barrett & O’Connor Center features flexible hoteling and meeting space for ASU faculty and staff visiting Washington, D.C. Hoteling workspace features ASU WiFi, printing capabilities, and basic office supplies. Meeting space is available for groups of up to 20 guests. Government relations support

Planning an event at the Barrett & O’Connor Center

The Office of Government and Community Engagement (GCE) supports ASU faculty and staff with questions related to the federal legislative process. Examples of support services include:

  • Engaging Members of the Arizona Congressional Delegation on ASU business (letters of support for a grant, expedited visa processing, help with a federal agency, etc.)
  • Submitting federal appropriations requests
  • Reviewing legislative text
  • Information about visiting the U.S. Capitol

Faculty research and leadership opportunities

The Research Engagement Office (REO) provides a comprehensive support system to help faculty members identify and secure federal research funding and develop their potential for leadership on the national stage. REO continuously monitors emerging funding opportunities, gathers intelligence on new agency priorities and carries out ongoing dialogue with agencies, universities, science organizations and think tanks. Drawing on a deep understanding of the federal funding landscape and agency-specific cultures and practices, along with deep connections throughout Washington, D.C., REO provides ASU faculty with:

  • Information on potential funding opportunities
  • Strategic support in securing research funding
  • Insight into best practices for working with federal agencies and profiles of federal sponsors
  • Logistical support in preparing for federal sponsor meetings and site visits
  • Leadership opportunities through appointments to committees, panels and advisory bodies

This comprehensive support model empowers faculty to successfully navigate research opportunities, increase their national visibility and enhance the university’s research impact.
