Free Speech Project: The New York Times Is Great, But Who'll Cover Your Community?

An informed citizenry and a vigorous press that holds those in power accountable have long been hallmarks of American democracy, and integral to our right to free speech. But more and more communities, even sizable metro areas, are seeing an erosion of their news and information ecosystems, with the collapse of traditional media business models.

COVID-19 is but the latest reminder of how important it is to have robust and credible news-gathering at the local level that informs the public, and yet the crisis is being covered by ever-shrinking newsrooms across the country. On April 18, 2020. three media experts considered the future of the news business and possible remedies to the threat of what could prove a devastating news and information draught in coming years.

Hosted by Mi-Ai Parrish, Sue Clark-Johnson Professor in Media Innovation and Leadership, Arizona State University and former publisher of the Arizona Republic; Suzanne Nossel, CEO, PEN America and author of the forthcoming Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All; and, Kyle Pope, Editor and Publisher, Columbia Journalism Review.
