Reporting While Female

Female reporters and authors often face unique challenges when investigating and reporting for their work, especially in repressive regimes. Delphine Schrank, author of The Rebel of Rangoon: A Tale of Defiance and Deliverance in Burma, wrote the story of a group of resisters who fought for democracy in Burma/Myanmar against one of the world's most repressive military junta's, largely while working undercover. For much of the time Schrank was reporting on her book, Burma was sealed to foreign journalists, yet she was able to build relationships with dissidents from prison cells and safe houses and follow them into their most intimate thoughts and challenges. How can gender help or hinder a reporter's work in a repressive regime? And what can Schrank's experience and narrative tell us about the reality of women's rights and the future of female activists within the broader ongoing struggle for rights and freedom in Burma -- or in other freedom struggles?
